My food diary – Cape Town

July 24, 2025

Welcome to my food diary. A list of all the places that I enjoy eating at in and around Cape Town. If it is not on the list I might not have been there so please send me your recommendations or I might not like it so have left it off...this is for mouth watering, good food only and it is an ever evolving list with hopefully many more places added.

Breakfast:

  • Paulines
    • This is a firm favourite in my books with 3 of them in Cape Town; Sea Point, Green Point and Gardens. The food is always great and there is nice buzz in there.
    • My order: Scrambled eggs on toast with avocado and tomato relish (always get the relish) and a cardamon bun on the side. I could eat this for breakfast every day.
  • Strangers Club
    • Located in Green Point in an old house this is a great spot for breakfast, lunch, catching up on emails or browsing the clothing section as they always have very cute outfits and accessories in store.
    • My order: Our Breakfast with poached eggs and sautéed spinach
  • Between Us
    • Based on Bree Street in town I love the vibe here, it is a small and intimate restaurant. The decor is really nice and breakfast is always quick. Note they are not open on Sunday, I have made that mistake before!
    • My order: Poached Pear with blackberry yogurt and granola
  • Loading Bay
    • Paulines big brother based in De Waterkant. Great food and really nice Aesop products if you fancy getting boujee with your skincare. You can get the standard Paulines breakfast options here but there is also a bigger menu with lots more options.
    • My order: Red Roots, trust me carrots for breakfast work! This is quite salty but I like that element to it. Their garden and mint and fresh ginger teas are a nice to spice up my tea choices.
  • Mulberry and Prince
    • Based just off Bree Street this is a cute breakfast spot that does a dance of delights. My friends love the chicken and waffles where I am more of a pancakes type gal. This spot is a treaty type breakfast place, you don't want to go here every day but it is nice for a special occasion.
    •  My order: Shally's pancakes (at one point these were taken off the menu and I was devastated...thankfully they are back on)
  • Babel
    • This is one of the greatest breakfast experiences I have ever had, so much so that we have set up a breakfast club where we are going to try to go here once a month. Based at Babylonstoren and worth the drive from Cape Town this buffet style breakfast is to die for. All the produce are fresh from the farm with a mix of croissants, yogurt, seasonal fruits, cheeses and a hot breakfast made to order too. Once you have finished breakfast wonder around the gardens and go for a walk to find the buffalo.
    • My order: EVERYTHING, TWICE! I particularly liked the croissants, citrus yogurt and guavas.
  • Butter
    • There are two Butters in Cape Town one in town on Loop Street and the other in Sea Point. The Sea Point one is my local and I enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine if there is space. As the name suggests butter is a theme here with everything tasting great, probably because it is cooked with a tonne of the stuff. Just note the service here can be very slow so suggest not going here starving or in a rush because you might get irritated (I say this from personal experience).
    • My order: Butter Breakfast - I like that you get a full breakfast with a cheeky pancake and syrup in the middle of the plate. It is the best of both worlds combining sweet and savoury.
  • Juno
    • Cute spot based in a the Tropicana Hotel which is a beautiful pastel blue and pink (probably why I like it) art deco building. It has a nice vibe, the service is good and the food tasty. I also get my bread from here. I get the sourdough loaf, slice it up and pop it in my freezer to eat throughout the week.
    •  My order: Croissant french toast. Enough said!

Lunch:

  • Norfolk Deli
    • One of my go to cake and sandwich stops. Norfolk Deli has a fun vibe, WiFi if you want to work  and good produce to take home with you too, I get my frozen berries for my smoothies here!
    • My order: Toasted Chicken Mayo, by far the best in Cape Town with just the right amount of mayo to chicken and pickles on the side for people like me who save eating pickle for races!
  • The General Store
    • Based on Bree street in town it is east to pass this place by without knowing it is there but they have great lunches and rusks, their rusks are to die for. The have a different proteins and salads each day that you can ix and match for lunch. I am actually going to go here tomorrow.
    • My order: Lemon and paprika chicken with herby brown rice and courgettes
  • Juno
    • Once again I love this spot mainly because of what it looks like from the outside, ok and the bags of sweets on sale inside too. They have a deli sale counter of food with different protein and veg options which rotate daily, a nice health lunch that fills you up!
    • My order: Grilled salmon with a couscous salad
  • The Table
    • Based just outside Stellenbosh it is worth the day trip to go here but you should only go in summer when you can sit outside in the garden. There is no menu and the food is put on the table in big bowls to share as if you are having a family meal together. I loved the surprise of what we were getting and tucking in to an abundance of food.
    • My order: There is no choice so what ever you are given...this is a good thing.
  • South Yeaster
    • I could go here for breakfast and happily stay working in the corner until lunchtime which I have done on a few occasions waiting for the focaccia to come out of the oven so I can tuck into a fresh sandwich which makes me feel like I am in the French Alps sitting on a hill!
    • My order: Salami and Danbo Cheese, Creme Fraiche Mayo, Chilli Relish, Rocket on Focaccia
  • New York Bagels
    • When it comes to bagels in Cape Town there is a bit of a turf war going on but these are my fave out of the big hitters. They are soft with a bit of chewiness to them which is how I like my bagels. Based in town this is a great lunch option and their cheesecake is banging too!
    • My order: The BART

Dinner:

  • Between Us
    • I think this would make a great spot for a date, it is cozy and has a nice vibe without being too busy and I love an exposed brick wall.
    • My order: Pappardelle, oxtail ragu, Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • Cousins
    • A bustling Italian in town famous for 'The Cousins Pasta' but I personally think this is overrated and their gnocchi or other pastas are way better. Portions can be a tad small too (if you are greedy like me) so order a starter or swing past Moro Gelato for an ice cream on your way home.
    • My order: Tagliatella Carbonara or Gnocchi all’Agnello
  • Black Sheep
    • Vibey restaurant in Gardens, it is quite dark and always loud and bustling in here with great food and a stellar view of Table Mountain if you sit by the window. We often get a few dishes to share here and the chefs are legends and tell you the best order to eat them in.
    • My Order: South Indian Coconut Fish Curry with Courgettes, Rice, Sambals & a Poppadom
  • Liveita
    • Delicious Napolentana style pizza best enjoyed right there straight out of the oven. I have had a take away before but it doesn't travel well. Plus there is a Moro across the road for dessert which is a great reason to eat there, if you need one.
    • My order: Fichi E Crudo
  • LA Farms
    • A firm fave amongst my burger club and it is currently topping the rankings. Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to get a table but it is worth it if you can. Just get the Angus burger, don't bother with anything else you will only have regrets oh and there is a burger special on Tuesday nights; a burger and chips or salad for R99.
    • My order: Grass-fed Angus burger with chips and a side salad
  • Upper Union
    • I always feel a bit fancy going here, it is not a place I go to all the time, more a couple of times a year as a treat when they change their menus. Ask to sit upstairs if you go as I feel like there is more of a vibe up here and get a few dishes to share. The bread is also banging, I could just eat that to be fair.
    • My order: The burrata, southern fried chicken and kingklip croquette
  • Ouzeri
    • Cute Greek restaurant in Cape Town but not your normal style Greek place, it has a modern twist. The service is great and the food delicious but stick to the veggie options, probably the only time I will ever say this. Order a few dishes for the table to share and tuck in.
    • My order: Green tomatoes and the cabbage, how they make cabbage taste that good I have no idea. Actually I do, all the butter!
  • Tinswallo
    • If you want to really treat yourself then go here. It is along Chapmans Peak Drive and right by down the sea so the waves crash alongside you as you sit and enjoy your meal, if you can ask for a table next to the water. It is a set menu and it is served for two people, I took my parents so there were just three of us and we opted to go for a serving for 4 people instead of a half option which I recommend. The bread was insane and I would happily eat this every day until I die!
    • My order: You have no choice except when it comes to dessert so definitely add on of those.
  • Pizza Shed
    • There are three of these beauties around Cape Town and what I love is the consistence between them all and the fact the menu is relatively small so you don't have to decide between 100 different options. I really like going to the one in Observatory and sitting on the roof as it has a great view of Table Mountain. This one does work well as a take away and the ratio of tomato sauce to mozzarella is spot on. Oh and they have a lunchtime special on some of their pizzas; Mon - Fri lunchtime R100.
    • My order: Pepperoni with hot honey
  • La Colombe
    • Another fancy restaurant that you would go to on a special occasion. Based at the top pf Constantia New the view is incredible. The service is amazing and the food was more like art. It is a taste sensation. You can't be in a rush if you go here, we went for lunch and it took about 3hrs but it didn't feel like a drag. It is at the expensive side of the scale but they do have a winter special which is what we went for.
    • My order: It is a set menu so you don't have a choice. I really liked the alcohol free cocktails and they looked just as fancy as the real deal.
  • Andy's Sushi
    • This is just down the road from me (don't stalk me) and a place that I go to every couple of weeks when I can't be arsed to decide what to have for dinner. They are super quick and their sushi is always on point and a decent price too.
    • My order: Mini Combo + Veg spring rolls
  • Aerial
    • Based at the end of Regent Road in Sea Point Aerial is always busy. I do sometimes feel like it can be a bit uptight in there but the food is good so I am letting it join my list. A nice place to go if you want to dress up and a good Friday or Saturday spot to take friends to.
    • My order: Pappardelle lamb ragu, pomodoro, red wine and parmesan cream
  • Three Wise Monkeys
    • Another Sea Point banger this is a great spot for a ramen, sushi or a poke bowl. Just note it only has a few tables so sometimes you have to queue for ages to get in which can be a bit annoying so maybe a spot saved for winter when it is a bit biter in Cape Town.
    • My order: Salmon Poke Bowl
  • Novo
    • If you like pizza and wine this is your place to go as they work very hard on both changing up their offerings based on seasons and mood. Do not ask for substitutions on the menu as you won't be allowed to change things which I like. They back themselves with the pairings of ingredients and I have yet to have a bad or average pizza her so they are doing something right.
    • My order: Park Estate
  • De Virje
    • This burger joint is based out in Stellenbosch, there is one in the Time Out Market in Cape Town but it is not as good, take the road trip. These burgers are mouth watering good and a banger after a run in Jonkershoek. Bonus they come with a free ice cream covered in hundreds and thousands!
    • My order: The De Virjie burger (juicy) with chips
Lievita pizza my fave is middle row on the right

Cake and pastries:

  • Norfolk Deli
    • This is my number one cake spot in Cape Town. The vibe here is amazing, the staff are lovely and Chelsy and Marius are a delight. The menu is small but perfect. They are famous for their Crookies, if you can get your hands on a pistachio and white chocolate one dig in but Birthday Cake will always be my fave.
    • My order: Birthday cake and a Norfolk Fizz
  • Moro Gelato
    • Wasn't sure which category this fell under so it is going here. Don't even bother with any other ice cream shop in Cape Town go directly here, the end!
    • My order: Caramel Cookie Crumble and Peanut Paridiso (it says it is peanut butter sorbet but it is wizardry and delicious)
  • Pyjamas and Jam
    • Based in Somerset West it is worth the drive to go here. Stepping inside is like going back in time. The decor is really nice and this place is always packed. Choose your cake the minute you walk in the door, don't wait because once it is gone it is gone and I don't want you to miss out what you have your eyes on, this happened to me and I was devastated. There is also a very random but great fancy dress shop here. Note it is closed on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. Breakfast is also tasty here and if they ever have the Green Omelette back on the menu get it.
    • My order: Any of their "mini" cheesecakes, I had a Turkish delight one once which was insane!
  • South Yeaster
    • You can find this gem in Hout Bay. Run by my friend Brode it is a great spot for a post run coffee or a working lunch. Their pastries are great and I would say the best almond croissant in Cape Town...I have tasted a lot of them. Pair this up with a run or ride up and down Chappies to to get the full Cape Town experience. Open Tuesday - Saturday.
    • My order: Almond Croissant (ask for it to warmed up) or a Pain Aux Raisin is they have it

Post run coffee and hot chocolate:

I am going to pull in some help for this category. I like a good coffee every now and then but I am more team hot chocolate...I basically live off the stuff. So the coffee reccos are from my coffee snob friends (I am just waiting for them to deliver the goods) and the hot choccies are mine!

  • Norfolk Deli
    • You get a toasted marshmallow with this hot chocolate need I say more? One the sweeter side of the scale but I have a sweet tooth so it ticks all the boxes for me.
  • South Yeaster
    • Since SYB added the hint of dark chocolate to their hot chocolate it is now a winner for me paired with an almie obvs!
    • The best mid-ride coffee stop and if you're not in to cycling, it's still 100% worth the trip. (Michelle G)
  • Ollie's
    • Ollie has won prizes for his coffee and should win one for his hot chocolate too, always made to perfection and you can drink it straight away which is a sign of a good hot chocolate or coffee for that matter
    • The best coffee in Cape Town - speciality coffee at its finest. Like the hot chocolate the temperature is perfect to drink immediately, the milk texture is precise and the cycling aesthetic is the cherry on top. (Michelle G)
  • Seattle
    • As far as chains go this is a really good hot chocolate and the consistency is bang on here. It is always good and I always go for a tall one.
    • Coffee quote from my mother "fucking delicious"! Her order: a Cappuccino
  • Strolla
    • These guys have a morning special of R25 for a coffee before 9am, perfect for after a run or your morning stroll. Their muffins are pretty good too just ask for it to warmed up.
  • Paulines
    • Definitely for the purists! Smooth and beautiful. (Same as Rosetta) obviously the cinnamon buns add to the mix. (I don’t like how the coffee is just warm though - but I know blah blah it’s about how the beans need a certain heat). (B Tovey)
    • The flat white is a solid 10/10 every time and comes with a side of sparkling water. If you're looking for a remote working spot, the newly opened Garden's location should be your go-to spot. (Michelle G)
  • Rosetta
    • Their Coffee may as well be art refined, curated and not to be rushed. (B Tovey)
    • With an ever changing selection of beans, this one is for the serious coffee drinkers. Decide between a Classic or Progressive bean, roasted to perfection - it's a taste experience and worth every penny. (Michelle G)
  • EspressoLab de Waterkant
    • Voted best coffee shop in Africa and it's clear to see why. Another one for the serious coffee drinkers with a Mod Bar and pour-over station, and of course the in house bakery is a win. (Michelle G)
  • Origin
    • love them! What I love more though is their variety of roasts! (B Tovey)
  • Truth
    • Love!! Bold, strong, full throttle. Not for the feint hearted. (B Tovey)
  • Naked
    • Just simply delicious coffee , nice and strong, no frills, no fuss. A bit pricey. (B Tovey)
  • Bootleggers
    • Say what you want I love them and they’re near the top of my list (for a franchise). I always take a deep breath with closed eyes after that first sip. (B Tovey)
  • Molten Toffee (Gardens)
    • Quietly excellent, doing their own thing (and doing it well!) Don’t underestimate them. Their egg and bacon cups are delish! (B Tovey)
  • Woolies
    • You just can’t leave them off reliable, everywhere, and just damn good. (B Tovey)
  • Plato
    • I hate the hype around this place but their coffee is really good. And their baristas write cute notes to you on your cup. (B Tovey)
    • There's always a Plato nearby and you can be sure that you're getting the same experience across branches. With a variety of drinks, you'll find something that tickles your taste buds. (Michelle G)
